Description
B-17 Flying Fortress Cockpit - by Dave Koch
This photograph captures the storied interior of a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress — the legendary World War II bomber known as Ye Olde Pub. Shot from the flight deck, this view immerses the viewer in the cockpit where countless historic missions were flown across the skies of Europe. The vintage controls, aged leather seats, and analog instrumentation all echo the craftsmanship and pressure of aerial combat in one of history’s most iconic warbirds.
Ye Olde Pub holds a special place in aviation lore. Famously damaged during a bombing run over Germany in 1943, it was spared from destruction by a German pilot — Franz Stigler — who chose not to shoot it down, creating one of the most incredible stories of honor and humanity in wartime aviation. This aircraft has become a flying symbol of both engineering resilience and the human spirit.
Photographed by aviation photographer Dave Koch, this cockpit image was captured with great care and reverence. The tight space, variable lighting, and complex tones make this one of the most difficult compositions in aviation photography — yet every detail is crisp and true. It’s a rare glimpse into the controls of aviation history.
